Hospital Elevator

The advent of tall, multi-story buildings in the 19th century created a demand for alternatives to staircases for transporting people and goods between levels. This gave rise to the elevator. In fact, the elevator’s invention paved the way for even loftier structures.

While the concept of mechanically lifting loads dates back to around 236 BC with Archimedes’ rope and pulley-based hoist, it wasn’t until the early 19th century that a functional elevator came into existence. This early version was a hydraulic elevator, utilizing a vertical plunger that moved within a cylinder, propelling the elevator car. The motion was driven by pressurized liquid.
